United Continental Holdings (UAL) Flies To Top Spot

UAL Corp and Continental Airlines Inc have officially merged as of Friday’s close. The new company, United Continental Holdings Inc. has already started trading on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker symbol UAL. The stock was already up 4.4% in Friday’s trading session.

United Continental Holdings is now the biggest airline in the world by traffic, as the company’s subsidiaries operate approximately 5800 flights all over the globe. However, UAL’s market capitalization is 7.8B which is still lower than Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) market cap of 9.47B, despite operating more flights. Delta Air Lines will have to face stiff competition going forward, in order to win back its status as world’s largest airline. It has held that title for the last 2 years.
