The brand new HP Folio by Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is being pushed heavily to consumers, showing off the tablet-notebook’s ultra thinness and ultra lightness. What’s strange is that just more than 4 years ago, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) launched the MacBook Air, advertising many of the same features that the new HP tablet-notebook now contains. For one thing, this demonstrates that HP is 4 years behind Apple when it comes to laptops. Just months ago the company was contemplating getting rid of their entire PC business, in which HP is the leading seller of PC’s, and now it finally struck them that thin and light is the new trend. Where was HP four years ago? It seems as though the company is slow at imitating competitor products. In addition, the Folio does not being new revolutionary features to the table and may be set to confuse buyers by touting it as a tablet-notebook, as it is clearly not a tablet.
A lack of innovation at the once visionary HP seems to be the real cause for the languishing stock price. The stock trades at nine times earnings, as investors have been driven out of the stock due to poor decision making in the past. HP needs to look back to its roots and bring back innovation into the company so it can once again thrive going into the future.
