As
per a report
from The WSJ, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has now started offering the same
discounts on its iPhones at its retail stores, as offered by other retailers
and carriers.
According
to MacRumours - Apple's retail stores have been given authorization to match
these discounted prices from approved major retailers and carriers. In all
cases, Apple will discount iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models by $49.01 upon request
to bring pricing down to $349.99/$249.99/$149.99 for the iPhone 4S and $49.99
for the iPhone 4.

However
customers will have to specifically ask for the discount and mention the
particular retailer offering that discount for Apple to match that. The offers
are available only at Apple's retail stores on the ground, and are not
available on its online store.
Apple's
discount strategy might be a ploy to get its older version of the iPhones
moving off the shelves as it readies itself for the launch of its latest
version.
The
new iPhone 5, scheduled to be launched on September 12 according to general
consensus, is expected to be a game-changer for the company and help it to get
ahead of bitter rival Samsung in the smartphone segment.
Apple
is however not advertising its new discounting strategy and its employees at
its retail stores have also not been told the reason for the discounts.
