The widespread criticism over its new mapping
application has prompted Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) to start hiring developers to
work on it and refurbish it.
With its new operating system iOS6, Apple decided to
ditch Google Maps and use its own Apple Maps, which is available on its new
iPhone 5.
Existing users of its iPhones, who want to upgrade to
its new operating software will also find themselves forced to use its Apple
Maps.
AppleInsider reported on the iPhone maker's hiring
plans. It said that over the past week the company has posted "multiple
listings for software engineers who will handle development, real-time
rendering and overall upgrades to the fledgling mapping service, among
others."
Apple is seeking to fill positions for developing 3D
flyover models, including "mesh generation of terrain" and "road
rendering" in a C++ environment. Another engineer is being sought to work
on both the client and server to develop "advanced dynamic label layout of
road labels, points of interest and other labels on the map," AppleInsider
reported.
Those who have used the maps have been criticising it
on Twitter and various other social forums. The use of the 3D features on the
maps renders laughable and sometime nightmarish images of well-known monuments
and structures, according to one report.
Incidentally there have also been reports that Google
is working on a new Google Maps app for iOS 6 and is waiting for Apples for it.
It remains to be seen if Apple will go back to Goggle
or prefer to upgrade and improve its own application.
