Apple
Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) has already started working on improving its maps that have
been severely criticised by users and analysts.
There are small and
significant changes which have been noticed by users of iPhone 5 and those who
have downloaded Apple's latest operating system iOS6.
One of the major
complaints against the maps was that it distorted 3D images. More 3D data has
been added.
For instance the
statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge look much better than their previously
flat images.
Chief Executive Tim
Cook, who had apologised for the state of the maps just a week back, had also
said that the company will be working on the maps to make them better.
While there were
reports that it would take a long time for the iPhone maker to make the
improvements, it looks like the company has put its engineers and developers to
work round the clock to stem the criticism.
Analysts said that
while the changes that have been already made are small, they are significant
in so far as they would restore some of the confidence that may have been
eroded when the maps were initially being used.
Correcting the 3D
images is however only one part of the problem. It has to fix the wrong
locations as well as the erroneous directions that users of the maps have had
to contend with.
For its new operating
system, Apple decided to do away with Google Maps and preferred to use its own
maps, the experience with which has been less than perfect.
Apple is trying to
reduce its dependence on Google and create its own ecosystem of applications.
