Shortly after Microsoft
Corporation(NASDAQ:MSFT) declared the Surface tablet, speculations started
swirling that it might manufacture phones too, which has been denied by
Microsoft. However, the rumors have surfaced again with more information.
As per BGR, Microsoft
could make its own Windows Phone 8 smartphone in the near future in order to
help build more interest in the platform. The device would not make it to the first
round of Windows Phone 8 gadgets, but it has chances of being ready for the
second wave of phones that are likely to come next year.
The Microsoft phone
will be a top-notch phone to rival with Samsung Galaxy S III and Apple’s iPhone
5. It will also compete with Lumia 920 and Windows Phone 8X. Specs of the Microsoft
phone is not yet known, it is believed to have a dual-core Snapdragon S4 and a
1280x768 display like Lumia 920 or 720p display like the 8X.
Microsoft’s Windows
Phone will have the Surface name as per the report of China Times. It seems
that Microsoft is turning the term as one that stands for Microsoft-made
devices. The Surface phone will probably come to market sometime in the
beginning of 2013, if at all it releases.
There seems to be no
logic behind Microsoft competing with its OEMs, but then again, Google does it
all the time. Microsoft’s platform does not have many phones. However, Surface
phone is enough to interest more people to the platform.
BGR has not been able
to confirm the exact timing of the release, but another source suggested that
Microsoft will not release a self-brand smartphone in the first round of
Windows Phone 8 device launches coming up during the holidays this year.
This is not the first
effort made by Microsoft to develop self-branded phones. The firm has release
Kin series of phones in the US earlier.
