Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Surface Smartphone Could Release Next Year

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) sure knows how to persevere. Initially, it was learnt that Microsoft was potentially working on a Surface smartphone that would be equivalent of a Surface tablet. This seems to be a theoretically cool idea but it may be a huge blow to Nokia that has placed its future on Windows Phone. Also, Microsoft’s other hardware partners would not be pleased with this venture.

There seems to be more and more details regarding Surface phone now. It is not likely that the phone will release before 2013. The launch will also depend on how good Windows Phone 8 works with consumers, as per reports of Tom Warren at The Verge. It makes sense as to why Microsoft would not want to squash any impetus from Windows Phone 8. However, if the platform keeps on languishing into next year, the company could launch the Surface phone to spark some buzz.

Will MSFT Move Back To New Highs? Find Out Here

The tech world has been drooling considerably for Microsoft’s Surface tablets ever since they were launched in June this year. This has helped in spurring excitement for Windows 8 tablets generally. Microsoft did not have any release schedule for Surface at the moment. Also, there is no solid pricing info, but that has not stopped people from speculating about the Surface.

Microsoft would be foolish if it does not explore a Windows Phone unit of its own. The firm’s first stab at its own smartphones failed exceptionally. However, that does not mean that Surface smartphone will suffer the same doom. Surface smartphone will be backed by a stronger OS and app ecosystem. Microsoft may also want to enjoy freedom that Google enjoys with its Nexus line.

Another question is, is Microsoft in a position to put its partners again? Ever since it has blindsided its PC partners with the Surface and made important last-minute alterations to Windows Phone 8’s kernel, there has been concerns regarding Microsoft’s reliability.
