Yahoo! Inc.(NASDAQ:YHOO) needs an overhaul and Chief
Executive Marissa Mayer s working on giving the homepage of the Internet portal
a major makeover.
Mayer, who just gave birth to a baby boy, has not
really finalised the details of the makeover and just has some broad strokes in
mind, Business Insider reported quoting sources.
The new homepage is not likely to be launched anytime
soon, but it is work-in-progress.
According to a source who spoke to Business Insider,
Mayer (a former Google executive) wants the homepage to be more akin to what
Google or Facebook looks like.
"It would be Google-like in the sense that users
will go there in order to find links that will take them somewhere else. The
hope is that they will come back for more."
"It would be Facebook-like in that it might
prominently feature a "News Feed," an element of Web design that has
become a staple of modern Web sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and
Quora.”
The new Yahoo homepage is set to feature social content,
news feeds from around the World Wide Web and also resources for developers to
develop new applications for the users of Yahoo.
The aim is to transform the Yahoo site from being a
mere portal to being a platform, with user interactivity.
There have been very little changes that Yahoo has
made over the years to its homepage though it has revamped its web-based mail
and introduced features like integrating it with Facebook .
Along with modernising comes the risk that the
homepage will link to external content and sites and this could result in
draining out of revenues in the short term.
However this is a risk that Mayer has to take and a
call that she has to make.
