Sony Corporation (NYSE:SNE): PlayStation 3 has 70 million sales figures worldwide


The PlayStation 3, the third home video game console developed by Sony computer entertainment, has hit the milestone of 70 million consoles sold and reached the same tally of its rival Xbox.

As announced by Sony computer entertainment the PS3 crossed its 70 million line on November 4.First released on 2006 the PS3 has gone through many revisions and still going strong. It has been streamlined, equipped with larger disk-drive capacities and given a number of software updates. Latest version is half the weight of original PS3 and is well received by customers worldwide.

The PlayStation Network, which launched alongside thePS3, now operates in 59 countries, still proves a popular feature for consumers excusing occasional security breach.

The PS3 sales figure is based on console shipped across the world rather than full units of PS3 owned by consumers .However, its rival Xbox console from Microsoft, launched a year earlier reached 70 million sales figure in September this year.SCE further added, the PlayStation Move motion controller, which adds movement and motion to gaming like Microsoft’s Kinect technology, surpassed 15 million unit sale worldwide on November 11.

Currently, there is no official word on the successor of PlayStation 3 and Rival Xbox 720,but expected that next generation console will be released in next few years.
