Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN), which has been operating Video On Demand on its web site since July 2008 is now facing tough competition from Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX). Amazon, which offers a wide selection of products such as movies and television accessories for its customers, also offers solutions for streaming videos and movies directly to users. Amazon allows movies to be purchased and downloaded onto your hard drive and allows people to stream content onto any device connected to the Internet. The company has partnered with Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) to deliver its content. The XBOX 360, for example, will play Amazon Video On Demand videos that have been downloaded to your PC.
However Amazon Video On Demand is being surpassed by Netflix which is taking up market share quickly. Netflix's advertising campaign has gained popularity as the company offers movie packages for just $8 per month. Netflix can also be found on video game consoles (XBOX, PlayStation, Wii) and is partnered with Apple. Will Amazon be able to make a comeback, or is Netflix the new dominant player when it comes to streaming movies?
