Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shares climbed 2.14% to $31.32 in the after hour trading after the company after the company swung to a fourth quarter loss, hurt mainly by a hefty goodwill impairment charge related to its online services business and tied to the 2007 acquisition of aQuantive Inc.

The company reported a fourth quarter net loss of $492 million or $0.06 per share, as compared to net income of $5.87 billion or $0.69 per share for the year-ago quarter. Adjusted earnings for the latest quarter were $0.73 per share. Analysts expected the company to earn $0.62 per share for the fourth quarter.

People's United Financial, Inc. (NASDAQ:PBCT) osted second-quarter profit of $64.8 million or $0.19 per share, as against $51.2 million or $0.15 per share in the same period last year. Net-interest income increased to $236 million, versus $221.2 million in the same period last year. Net-interest margin was 3.97%, as compared to 4.13% in the year ago period. Analysts expected the company to earn $0.19 per share for the quarter. Non-interest income totaled $75.7 million, down from $76.6 million last year.

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) stock climbed 11.17% to $39 in the after hour trading after the company’s second-quarter earnings plunged owing to much weaker sales and profit margins.

Swift Transportation Co (NYSE:SWFT) shares increased 3.64% to $8.25 in the after hour trading after the company posted second quarter net income of $33.7 million, or $0.24 a share, from $19.6 million, or $0.14 a share, in the same period a year ago. Excluding items, the company earned $0.27 a share. Operating revenue grew 3% to $872.6 million. Analysts had expected earnings of $0.23 a share on reveneue of $882.8 million.
