Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has to pay the price for its Maps

While it may not seem a big deal to many, in the tech world where reputations are destroyed in the blinking of an eye, it is a very big deal.

Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) should not have released its mapping application if it was not ready for the market. The shoddiness of the product, its erroneous results and its often hilarious consequences, show that the developers had not adequately tested the product before releasing it.

This is unacceptable for a company of the calibre of Apple that is known for producing high quality devices.

A limp apology from the Chief Executive Officer will not undo the damage that has already been done. Worse, the apology was actually followed by an advice to download other navigational applications while Apple engineers went about fixing the problem.

To use a simply analogy, it is like launching a car and apologising for the bad quality of its steering wheel. In the world of mobile devices, navigational aids are all important because the hand-held device becomes more than just an instrument to make calls and send messages.

Google has spent millions on its mapping program. Finnish handset maker Nokia spent millions of dollars to acquire Navteq that makes mapping software.

The result is that both Android and Nokia phones have much better mapping applications than what Apple has managed to produce.

While Apple was in a hurry to sever relations with rival Google, it shows a certain short-sightedness on the part of the Cupertino company not to have a product ready in place that could adequately replace Google's mapping application.

All it has done is show-up Apple as a company with very limited vision and tolerance abilities.

    2. another advertisement for apple...when has apple produced anything of quality? shoddy products made from off the shelf components that apple doesn't understand because it has no engineers...dropped calls, poor internet data service reception, and Maps? Sorry but they are really trying to bite off more than they can chew...who are they trying to compete with? google maps? hahahahhahahahahahhaha
No wonder former cronies that worked at apple are taking out of their resumes and applying for positions at google so they can steal technology for apple...what a laugh

    4. I am just curious to know why you would say "Apple is over." It's extremely clear that Apple is exploding. In fact, They just broke their all time sales record (yet again).
Anonymous, I am not attacking you here. I truly am just curious to know why someone would bother saying something that is obviously not the case? If you are a Samsung or google stock holder, I guess that I can understand. But is it just fan-boyism your motivation? Again, this is not an attack. I am always confused with apple fan boys and android fanboys alike. Can someone clue me in why?

  2. oh really ..... "the bad quality of its steering wheel" - more like a faulty channel on the radio.
Please dont get paranoide, I still rate the iPhone 5 the best iPhone to date and the best smart phone on the market. The radio channel will get sorted soon.

  3. People who write these articles are trying to make profit out of the Aaple Stock, driving it down and then eventually making profit on the way up. I would buy Iphone over any other phone.

  4. No product going to be 100% perfect, no matter who makes it. Apple launched its map app in the right time, made every one to think about alternative maps rather than Google, even made android user to try some thing different. Google made a big mistake and forgot their core business. They should have made their own map app for iOS long before apple started. I think Google is the one going to pay for its ignorance but we, the consumers and developers will benefit from this.

  5. As a long time share holder, I am furious with this fiasco. How much does Time Cook get paid again? Please remind me. So How does he let problems as HUGE as this slip through? I think we are owed more than an apology, we deserve an explanation.

Tim I am sure you are having a great time being the CEO. Now roll up your sleeves and earn your pay! Stop coasting! Focus!

  6. If a map app fails so what? there are 100s of free map apps in apple store with turn by turn navigation and voice direction. for example "Nav Free" In fact i never used my GPS ever since i installed this App. I ll still buy iPhone considering its quality of hardware.

  7. This issue has been blown out of proportion and you’re just the latest to jump on the bandwagon.
From the consumer perspective, it is a step backward. The new Maps app is inferior to Google Maps.
That being said, it is no way a terrible, unusable piece of software that some media would like you to believe.
From Apple’s perspective, they didn’t have a choice. Google was putting its Android platform ahead by limiting features like turn by turn navigation to iOS users.
The only way to get their app on par with Google was to release it as quickly as possible and utilize the huge user base to improve the quality of the service.
With more than 100 million iOS 6 users by the end of the year reporting problems, the quality of the Apple Maps app will increase exponentially. By next year, Google Maps will be a vague memory.
Insinuating that this map issue will have major consequences on Apple’s bottom line is just ridiculous.

  9. You are way off on this one. Apple can expect to have a perfect map system that has been tested be maybe 100 apple employes. To be truly great, it had to release it to the public to make it viable for the future. Maybe their rhetoric about how good maps is, was off, but regardless of that, you obviously don't know how creating a pure, accurate map client for the United States works.
