The much-anticipated iPhone 5 is having more issues
than any of its earlier versions.
First it was Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) Maps, then it was
problems with connectivity, and now there are issues related to downloading of
unwanted data.
Verizon subscribers were especially prone to this
problem of suspicious overages of data. According to Sci-Tech
Today, iPhone 5 owners who were on a Verizon network found that the phone was
downloading data through the network services provider instead of a WiFi
network where it was available.
Apple is immediately addressing the problem through an
upgrade to its carrier settings, but the persistent and niggling issues have,
to some extent, tarnished the image of the company as the producer of quality devices.
Persistent issues like these, raises questions as to
whether Apple was hasty in introducing the phone into the market.
"Apple's reputation as a savvy mobile-technology
provider has been tarnished in recent days as the iconic device maker has struggled
to address problems with the new iPhone 5," Sci-tech said.
Discussion boards on the iPhone 5 were filled with
users complaining about more data being downloaded than they were actually
using.
On Friday Apple issued a carrier settings upgrade to
fix the problem and Verizon told media outlets that its iPhone 5 users would
not be charged for the data overages, Sci-tech said.
However, Verizon subscribers who have already
purchased an iPhone 5 will need to perform a manual upgrade for which Apple has
posted a step-by-step set of instructions on an iPhone 5 support page.
