Microsoft
Corporation(NASDAQ:MSFT) has finally disclosed the price of the Surface tablet.
Interested people can get the 32 GB model without a touch cover at $499.
The basic 32 GB model is
sold out, as per the pre-order page of Microsoft Surface. The page reveals that
the backorders will ship out in a span of 3 weeks.
It goes without saying that
it is indeed good news for Microsoft. As per ZDNet, the company has placed an
order for 5 million Surface tablets. It hopes to sell them within the fourth
quarter. If this initial sell out is an indication, they may well be on their
way to achieve the goal.
A question, however, comes
into mind. Will the other more pricey models also sell out? Both the models
that are priced at $599 and $699 are still listed as being in stock and
shipping on 26th October. Customers, who are interested in can start
seriously considering putting the extra $100 to get one. Also, the costlier
models would come with the amazing touch covers.
Sure there are still a host
of questions when it comes to the selling the device out. How many pre-orders
was Microsoft letting before it put the tablet on backorder? Are the costlier
models getting similar response? Is Microsoft expecting the Surface to sell
well after the first early adopter period? Microsoft has been reached out to
comment.
Irrespective of any factor,
Surface is off to a great start. There were a lot of negative comments related
to the price. However, it has not stopped countless people from placing
pre-orders of the device. It sure will be interesting to see if iPad Mini
receives this kind of response too. They are not technically rivaling, but the
two devices in question will surely be the to major tablets for spending
dollars over the holiday season.
